20 Minutes to Fitness was founded in St. Louis by Paul and Laura Miller, primarily as a place where they could benefit from the unique and effective form of fitness referred to as “slow cadence” strength training. From 2002 to 2005 they opened two studios in the St. Louis area which they continue to successfully operate with a team of talented certified Personal Fitness Coaches.

In 2003, my wife and current business partner, Virginia Phillips, while on a trip to St. Louis met the Millers through a friend of ours who was one of the Miller’s “satisfied and excited” clients. Our friend knew of Virginia’s background in bodybuilding and my background in franchising and wanted us to meet the Millers and learn about 20 Minutes to Fitness.

We visited the Millers at their studio and I was hooked: the unique equipment, the safe and slow movement protocol, the quiet, non-gym like atmosphere, and the fact that it took just one 20 minute session a week to be effective. I knew that this was a perfect business to franchise. Virginia, on the other hand was skeptical. After years of competing in bodybuilding competitions with endless hours of training in the gym, she had a hard time believing how you could get the positive results with only one, 20 minute session a week.

So, to satisfy Virginia’s concerns, for the next year we researched the protocol, traveling to seminars, meeting with the experts, and reading tons of material on the subject. And, Virginia was convinced. In 2004, we obtained the rights to open our own 20 Minutes to Fitness studio in a suburb of Sarasota, Florida. The primary purpose was to determine whether or not 20 Minutes to Fitness would be a viable concept to franchise. We worked on all aspects of the business, and working with the Millers, we built those processes, procedures, and systems that are necessary to support a successful franchise business model. And for all of the reasons set out in the 20 Minutes to Fitness Opportunities for Success portion of our website, we partnered with the Millers in creating our franchise company, 20 Minutes to Fitness International, LLC.

We have continued to perfect our model, and this year we opened our fourth studio, a franchise operation in downtown Sarasota. While we will never stop improving our business model, we feel that it is time to offer our franchise on an expanded basis.
